Mechanisms (Gears) Flashcards
what do sample gears have
A driven and a driver gear
On a gear, when the teeth are cut straight what are they called
Spur gear
what is it called when the driver is smaller than the driven gear
If the driver is smaller it is sometimes called a pinion
What does a sample gear look like
Does the smaller gear always turn faster or slower to the larger gear
faster
Does the larger gear always turn faster or slower
slower
What is torque
Torque is the rotating forces, measured in Nm.
What is meant by the gear ratio
The gear ratio is the ratio of numbers of teeth in the gear (driven) to the number of teeth in the pinion (driver)
if the torque increases what does speed do
speed decreases
what happens when torque decreases speed will..
increase
In sample gear train, how do you achieve a very high or very low gear ratio
by combining very large and very small gears
How do complex ‘compound’ gear trains achieve high and low gear ratios in a compact space
by coupling large and small gears on the same axle
what does the compound gear look like
how do you calculate overall gear ratio in a compound gear
you do the first driven gear (gear B) divided by the first driver gear (gear A) then times that by the second driven (gear D) divided by the second diver (gear C)
how do you calculate output speed
