Mechanism Of Expiration/Exhalation Flashcards
1
Q
Step 1 Of Expiration
A
Internal intercostal muscles contract, external intercostal muscles relax.
2
Q
Step 2 Of Expiration
A
Ribs move downwards an I wards decreasing the volume in the thorax.
3
Q
Step 3 Of Expiration
A
Diaphragm muscle relaxes, causing it to move upwards to its domed position decreasing the volume in the thorax.
4
Q
Step 4 Of Expiration
A
Decrease in volume of the thorax cause an increase in the pressure inside the lungs.
5
Q
Step 5 Of Expiration
A
Atmospheric pressure (air pressure outside the lungs) is lower than inside the lungs.
6
Q
Step 6 Of Expiration
A
Air flows out of the lungs down a pressure gradient. This is expiration - one breath out.
