Mechanism Of Atheroma And Infarction Flashcards
What is an atheroma
Degradation of the walls of arteries due to accumulation of fatty deposits and scar tissue which leads to restriction of circulation and risk of thrombosis
What is an infarction
Obstruction of blood supply to an organ or region of tissue by thrombus or embolus causing local death of tissue
Describe historical view of atheroma
-when young fine
As you get older fat is laid down in arterial wall
Someone with an infarction the fat stores start to detach and cause thrombosis
Role of lipoproteins and how they are taken up the cells
-transfer fats round the body
-taken up cells via mediated endocytosis
Common sites of atherosclerosis
-larger arteries
-carotid arteries
-circle of willis
-coronary arteries
-iliac arteries
