Mechanics - Work, Energy and Power (Module 10) Flashcards
Name some of the different types of Stores for Energy?
- Gravitational potential stores (position of objects in a gravitational field)
- Kinetic stores (moving objects)
- Thermal stores (hot objects)
- Elastic stores (compressed or stretched)
Give some examples of how Energy can be Transferred?
- Through radiation (e.g. by light)
- Through electricity
- Through mechanically (e.g. by sounds)
What is the Principle of Conservation of Energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed
How do you calculate Work Done?
Work Done = force x distance moved in the direction of the force (W=fsCosθ)
What part of the Force-Distance graph does the Work Done equal?
The Area underneath the line represents the work done
How Do You Calculate Kinetic Energy?
Ek = 1/2 m v^2 (1/2 mass x velocity)
How Do You Calculate Potential Energy?
GPE = mgh (mass x gravity x height)
Define Work Done
It is a force due to one object making the other object move
Define Heat Transfer
It is from a hot object to a cold object. Can be due to conduction, convection or radiation
Define Power
Power is the rate of transfer of energy
