Mechanics - Newton's Laws of Motion (Module 8) Flashcards
Define Newton’s First Law
Objects either stay at rest or move with constant velocity unless acted on by a resultant force.
Define Newton’s Second Law
Force is equal to to the change in momentum ( mV ) per change in time. For a constant mass therefore, force equals mass x acceleration. ( F=ma )
Define Newton’s Third Law
When two objects interact they exert equal and opposite forces.
What Is Thinking Distance, Braking Distance and Stopping Distance?
Thinking Distance = The distance the vehicle travels in the time it takes the driver to react.
Braking Distance = The distance the vehicle travels in the time it takes to stop safely, from when the brakes are applied.
Stopping Distance = Thinking distance + the braking distance.
