Mechanics- Physics Flashcards
Define- contact force
Force between two objects that are touching
Define- non contact force
Force between two objects that are not touching
An example of a non-contact force
Gravity/weight force, magnetism
An example of a contact force
Friction, air resistance/drag, thrust, push/pull
Define- balanced forces
Opposite forces that are of equal size
Define- unbalanced forces
Opposite forces of unequal size
Define- resultant/net force
The overall force acting on an object
Define- friction
Force that always acts to oppose motion or attempted motion
Define- air resistance (drag)
Friction force caused by air moving over an object
Define- average speed
The rate of change of distance travelled OR how fast you change your distance travelled in a certain amount of time (m/s or ms-1)
Define- deceleration
A decrease in speed
Define- acceleration
The rate of change of speed OR how fast you change your speed in a certain amount of time (m/s2 or ms-2)
Define- constant speed
Speed remains the same over a period of time
Define- weight
The downward force caused by gravity on an object, measured in Newtons (N)
Define- mass
The amount of matter that makes up an object, measured in kilograms (Kg)
What is the mass formula?
M= F/A (mass= force divided by acceleration)
What is the acceleration formula?
A=F/M (acceleration= force divided by mass)
What is the force formula?
F=MA (force= mass multiplied by acceleration)
What are some factors that influence friction?
The surface/contact area, the size and mass of the object
What are some factors that influence friction?
The surface/contact area, the size and mass of the object
Which has the least and most friction?
Air has the least friction and rough concrete has the most
What is the formula for average acceleration?
A= change in v/change in t (average acceleration= change in velocity divided by change in time)
What is CUTLASS?
C- crosses U- units T- title L- label axis A- axis scale S- straight line (with ruler) or smooth curve S- size
Define- displacement
How far we have travelled in a certain direction OR how far we’ve travelled from where we started
Define- velocity
Speed with a direction
What is the unit of force?
Newtons (N)
Define- forces
A force is a push or pull
What are the units used for acceleration?
ms-2
Define- velocity
Velocity is the speed of an object plus its direction.
What factors can increase acceleration?
Air resistance, thrust, mass etc
Where do you put time on a graph?
The bottom (x axis)
What does the triangle mean?
A “change in”
Out of speed and velocity which is the vector/scalar quantity?
Speed is called a scalar quantity and velocity is a vector quantity.
