Q

What is surfactant and what does it do?

A

Surfactant contains proteins that disrupt the forces between water molecules and the result is a reduction in the surface tension of the alveolar walls.

This means:
Alveolar spaces are less prone to collapsing
The lung is more compliant and is inflated easier
