Cell signalling Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the paracrine system

A

When one cell produces and released small molecules/hormones, another cell may have complementary surface receptors which these molecules may attach to, eliciting a reaction. This occurs over a SHORT distance

Q

Describe the endocrine system

A

Similar to the paracrine system… However, the small molecules enter the blood stream and travel to other molecules over LONGER distances

Q

Define ‘signal perception’ and ‘signal transduction’

A

Signal perception - when ligand latches onto a receptor
Signal transduction - when the protein starts to inhibit a reaction

After this occurs is the actual cellular response
