Mechanics Flashcards
displacement (s)
Distance travelled in a particular direction
Velocity (u,v)
Rate of change of displacement
Speed (u,v)
rate of change of distance
Acceleration (a)
Rate of change of velocity
Newton’s first law of Motion
An object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion remains in motion unless acted upon by an external force
Newton’s second law of Motion
An unbalanced force will cause an object to accelerate in the direction of the net force. F=ma
Newton’s third law of Motion
When two bodies interact A and B, the force that A exerts on B is equal to the force exerted by B on A
Translation equilibrium
Net force on a body is 0
Momentum (p)
product of mass and velocity
Impulse (J)
change in momentum
Law of conservation of momentum
The total momentum in a system remains constant
Conservation of energy
Energy can neither be created or destroyed but only transformed from one form to another
Elastic collision
A collision in which kinetic energy is conserved
Inelastic collision
A collision in which kinetic energy is not conserved, lost
Power (P)
rate of work done
