Gravitation Flashcards
Newton’s law of gravitation
The force of gravity between two objects is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the distance between them.
Gravitational field strength (g)
Gravitational force per unit mass on a point mass
Gravitational potential energy
Work done in moving a mass from infinity to a point in space
Gravitational Potential (V)
Work done per unit mass in moving a mass from infinity to a point in space
Equipotential Surface
Every point on a surface that has the same potential
Escape speed
minimum speed required of a rocket needed to escape the gravitational pull of a planet
Weightlessness in free-fall
Sense of weightlessness because there is no normal reaction acting on the person due to gravity
Weightlessness in orbital motion
Sense of weightlessness due to the spacecraft and objects been in freefall together as it orbits the Earth.
Weightlessness in deep space
Due to the minimal pull of gravity far from any massive object
