Mechanics Flashcards
What is a vector
Measures magnitude and direction
What is a perpendicular vector
Vectors at right angles
Define force
Push or pull effect
Define net force
The combined effect of all the forces acting on an object
What is normal force
The force exerted by a surface on and object in contact with it
Define frictional force
The force that opposes the motion of an object in contact with a surface
Define static friction
The frictional force when and object is standing still on a surface
What is maximum static friction
The frictional force when an object moves or slides over a surface
State Newtons law of motion in words
An object continues in a state of rest or uniform velocity unless it is acted on by an unbalanced force
State Newtons SECOND law
When a non-zero net(unbalanced) force acts upon on object, it will accelerate in the direction of the net force. The acceleration is directly proportional to the magnitude of the force and inversely proportional to the mass of the object
State Newtons second Law in sums
Fnet=ma
State Newtons THIRD law
When object A exerts a force on object B, object B simultaneously exerts an oppositely directed force of equal magnitude on object A
State Newtons Universal Law of Gravitation
Every particle in the universe attracts every other particle in the universe with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centers
Define weight
The gravitational force that Earth exerts on any object that is near its surface
Define mass
Measure of how an object resists a change in state
