Mechanics Flashcards
What is an elastic collision?
Where momentum and kinetic energy are conserved.
What is an inelastic collision?
Where momentum is conserved but kinetic energy isn’t because it is converted into other forms.
What is impulse?
Change in momentum.
What does the gradient of a displacement-time graph tell you?
The velocity.
What does the gradient of a
velocity-time graph tell you?
The acceleration.
What does the area under a
velocity-time graph tell you?
The displacement.
What is free fall?
When the object’s weight is the only force acting on it; there is only gravity.
What is Newton’s first law of motion?
The velocity of an object will not change unless a resultant force acts on it.
What is Newton’s second law of motion?
Acceleration is proportional to the force; F = ma
What is Newton’s third law of motion?
Every force had an equal and opposite reaction force.
When does terminal velocity occur?
When the friction force equals the driving force.
What does the word ‘work’ mean in Physics?
The amount of energy transferred from one form to another when a force causes movement of some sort.
What does the area under a
force-displacement graph tell you?
The work done.
What is the unit of work done?
Joule
What is power?
Work done per second.
