Mechanical Properties Flashcards
Define hardness
Resist deformation (denting/abrasion) when hit/scratched
Give an example of something very hard
Ceramics
Define resilience
(opposite of brittleness)
Resists shock and impact without breaking
Give an example of something very resilient
Rubber
Define malleability
The ability to be shaped (flattened or bent) WITHOUT breaking
Give an example of something malleable
Plastic
Define ductility
Ability to be pulled into a wire OR stretched (using tension) WITHOUT breaking
Define stiffness/rigidity
Ability to maintain shape when subjected to various constraints (against deflection)
Define corrosion resistance
Resists smoke, salt, and chemical products, oxidation, water, etc.
What are the properties for manufacturing?
- Malleability
- Ductility
