Mechanical Properties Flashcards
What does it mean by compressive strength?
The ability to withstand being crushed or shortened by pushing forces (compression)
What is meant by tensile strength?
The ability to resist stretching or pulling forces
What is meant by bending strength?
The ability to resist forces that may bend the material
What is meant by shear strength?
The ability to resist sliding forces on a parallel plane
What is meant by torsional strength?
The ability to withstand twisting forces from applied torque or torsion
What is meant by hardness?
The ability to resist abrasive way such as scratching surface indentation or cutting
What is meant by toughness?
The ability to absorb impact force without fracture
What is meant by plasticity?
The ability to be permanently deformed and retain the deformed shape
What is meant by ductility ?
The ability to be drawn out on the attention reducing the cross-sectional area without cracking for example of stretching and material into wire
What is meant by malleability?
The ability to withstand formation by compression without cracking
What is meant by elasticity?
The ability to be deformed and then returned to the original shape when the forces removed
What is meant by fusibility?
The ability of a material to be fused or converted from a solid to a liquid or molten state usually by heat. Fusibility is essential for metals that are being casted.
What is meant by corrosion/degration resistant?
The ability of the material to withstand environmental attack and decay
What is meant by mechanical properties?
Mechanical properties are associated with how the material reacts to an external force
What is meant by physical properties?
Associated with the actual make up of the material or the structure of the material
