Investigating And Testing Materials Flashcards

1
Q

Describe tensile test :

A

Having two clamps with the prepared sample in the middle. one of the clamps on the end would have weights as weights are added the material would stretch allowing you to understand the strength of the material as the last reflection underload would mean a high tensile strength

Q

Describe a test for toughness

A

Place the test piece in advice and use a hammer and hit the material . The more easily a material shatters or bends tells us the tough need as more brittle materials tend to break easily

Q

What is a workshop test for hardness?

A

By placing the dart punch on the sample material use a hammer to produce an indent the greater indent caused with allow us to understand the less hard it is

Q

Describe workshop test for my liability and ductility

A

Clamp and material into a vice and then bend the material at 90° the easily it fractures tells us that it is not as malleable

Q

How can the corrosion be tested of material?

A

Equally size material samples can be left outside in an exposed area of whether and can be left for a set length of time. Materials can then be visually inspected for surface corrosion.

Q

Describe an electrical conductivity test

A

Collect material samples of the same dimensions and mark a set distance to place the multimeter probes measure the resistance of the multimeter. The high the resistance the lower the conductivity.

Q

Describe a thermal conductivity test

A

Collect material samples of the same dimensions and then measure a set distance from one end of the material and place a thermometer there. Then light pants and banner under the other end of the material and record the time taken for the temperature to reach the set point at the other end of the material sample the shorter the time it takes the higher the thermal conductivity of the material is.

Q

Describe the industrial test for the tensile strength

A

A tensometer machine tests for tensile strength , where the test piece is held in a clamp at each end , where one clamp is fixed and the other moves on a worm drive gear mechanism pulling the material under tension. The test piece is stretched the load and distance travelled is plotted along a graph giving us information on the elastic limit you would point maximum load and final breaking point.

Q

Describe an industrial test for toughness

A

The ISO test is used to test toughness of a material, a notched test piece is held vertically in device of a machine and a pendulum is released from a set position and swings to strike the test piece where the energy absorbed by the test is calculated from the high the pendulum swings to after it hits the test piece. The material that absorbs the most impact is the toughest and gives the least pendulum swing.

Q

What are the two standard nondestructive testing methods?

A

Ultrasonic west soundwaves are post into the material different sounds indicate faults and x-ray were an x-ray being processed the material and an image projected onto a display screen allowing the observation of Thiny such as hairline cracks within the material
