Mech vent basic modes Flashcards
1
Q
A/C
A
- Assist/ control
- Minimum number of preset breaths are delivered to the vent but the patient can trigger additional breahts
- often used when mechanical ventilation is intiated
- CMV is the same
2
Q
CMV
A
- continous mandatory ventilation
- same as A/C
3
Q
SIMV
A
- synchronous intermittent mandatory ventilation
- Minimum number of breaths is set. Pt is allowed to initiate spontaneous breaths in-between the mandatory breaths
- Partital ventilatory support
- Used for weaning
- Distributes Vt evenly throughout lung fields reduces V/Q mismatching
- Helps decrease pt mean airway pressure
4
Q
CSV
A
- Continous spontaneous ventilation
- All breaths are spontaneous by the patient
5
Q
PCV
A
- Pressure control ventilation
- Pressure is the independent variable
- Inspiratory pressure is the set value
6
Q
CPAP
A
- Pt must be spontaneously breathing b/c no mandatory breaths are given
- Pressure above atmospheric is maintained
7
Q
IMV
A
- INTERMITTENT MANDATORY VENTILATION
- Mandatory breaths are delivered only when the measured minute ventilation drops below a preset threshold
- Mandatory breath frequency can never be higher than the set rate
8
Q
PSV
A
- Pressure support ventilation
- The patients spontaneous breath is supported by the ventilator during the inspiratory phase. Once the pt triggers the breath the vent adds pressure to make breathing easier
- The pressure level is set by the operator
- can be used to help the patient over come the airway resistance that is caused by the ETT
- higher the set pressure the easier for the patient to take a breath
- Time cycled and pressure limited
