Breath sounds Flashcards
1
Q
Vesicular
A
- Normal breath sounds
- quiet soft inhalation
2
Q
Eupnea
A
- Normal and rhythmic breathing
3
Q
Stridor
A
- typically heard over larynx and trachea on inhalation due to upper airway obstruction
4
Q
Wheeze
A
- from inflammation and obstruction of the airway often from bronchospasm
- monophonic- one tone
- polyphonic- multiple tones
- multiple spots
- in different fields causing the difference of sounds
5
Q
Coarse rhonchi
A
- the rattling sound caused by secretions in the airway
6
Q
Crackles
A
- Can be from fluid or secretion in alveoli
- heard early
- clear with cough
- late crackles are heard in atelectasis when the alveoli pop open
7
Q
Adventitious
A
- abnormal breath sounds or normal breath sounds but heard in the wrong place
8
Q
Rhonchi
A
- continuous low pitches rattling lung sounds that often resemble snoring
- Obstruction or secretions in larger airways are frequent causes of rhonchi.
- Rhonchi occur when air tries to pass through bronchial tubes that contain fluid or mucus.
9
Q
Ataxic breathing
A
- breathing pattern with irregular Vt and RR
- typically caused by damage to the medulla oblongata by trauma or stroke
10
Q
Kussmaul breathing
A
- rapid respiratory rate and higher than normal Vt
- associated with diabetic ketoacidosis
11
Q
pleural rub
A
- product of pleuisy
- inflammation of the pleural
- PAINFUL
- At a specific location at a specific volume of inspiration
12
Q
Cheyne-strokes breathing
A
- gradual increase in RR and Vt followed by gradual decrease followed by a period of apnea. continuous cycle
- caused by severe cardiovascular stroke and severe TBI including stroke and tumor
13
Q
Biot breathing
A
- short bursts of rapid RR and high Vt followed by 10-20 seconds of apnea
- Respirations are uniformly deep and relatively regular
- serve brain stem injury and meningitis
