Measuring Stress Flashcards
What are two strengths of using self report scales for measuring stress?
1) Can be used extensively and flexibly in psychological research - some researchers have used the original SRRS and HSUP scales whereas others have adapted them (e.g made the more specific) - use of self report scales in research has enabled a greater understanding of causes of stress
2) Stress is a personal experience and therefore the best way to understand it is to ask people about it (self report is the most direct way to do this)
What are three weakness or using self report scales to measure stress?
1) Cause and effect cannot be determined (Stress causes illness or an illness causes life changes such as retirement or a change in recreation, illness could mean more daily hassles and less uplifts)
2) Individual difference is not considered - same life event may require different levels of readjustment for different people - questions the accuracy
3) Time-consuming for participants to complete - participants may not maintain thoughtful, focused attention when complete ting it - questions the accuracy
