Identify the 2 different types of testing methods used to measure an animals behavioural needs.
- Preference tests
- Motivation tests
Preference shown, does not necessarily mean an animal’s welfare is compromised when it does not have access to that choice.
e.g. horses prefer corn to oats

What is a preference test?
determines an animals preference to something
e.g. choice of bedding type (mat vs straw vs shavings)
What is a motivation test?
Measures motivation to perform a behaviour.
This test shows how an animal will ration behaviours when restricted
e.g. eating, lying.
