Measuring abiotic factors Flashcards

1
Q

List 5 advantages of electronic devices used to measure abiotic factors

A
  1. Measurements are quick
  2. Quantitative
  3. Accurate
  4. Calibrated
  5. Can be automatically recorded at regular time intervals over an extended period of time.
  6. Data can also be transfeered to computers (wirelessly if necessary) for storage and analysis.

Q

What abiotic factors are still best done with conventional equipment?

A

Abiotic factors like soil depth are best done with conventional equipment like a ruler.

Q

What should be done when you have got an abiotic measurement?

A

Each abiotic measurement should be repeated several times at each sampling site and averaged.
The measurements might alos be repeated over a course of a day or a year, to accountt for daily and seasonal variations.

Q

Why are abiotic measurements taken?

A

The aim is to correlate the abiotic measurement with biotic measurements taken at the same 2 points to see if there is a casual relationship.
I.e. the abiotic factors could explain the distributions of the living organisms.
