Measures Of Tendency Flashcards
Mode
Most common
Mean
Sum of all divided by total number of items
Median
Middle value
Measure of dispersion
How spread out a set of scores are
Range
Highest-lowest
Variance
Their variability
Why don’t we use variance?
As it is left as a shared number so it looks artificially high
Standard deviations
The typical amount by which scores differ from the mean
Weakness of mean
Affected by outlines causing skew, unrealistic
Strength of mean
Easy to calculate,precise value
Strength of median
Not affected by outliers, always give value originally in the data set
Weakness of median
Not useful for other statistical tests
Strength for mode
Useful way to calculate average when data is nominal
Weakness for mode
May be multiple modes or none, may not respect the spread of data accurately
Strength for range
Easy to calculate, gives good idea of spread of data
Weakness of outliers
Affected by outliers and not useful for other statistical calculations
