  • GNI is the total income earned by a country’s residents (both domestically and abroad)
  • GDP + net income earned abroad

  • holistic view of well-being past just econ factors

  • doesnt show income ineq within countries
  • SA has high HDI, as good in health, edu, income, BUT v.high income ineq
  • doesn’t look at factors like political freedom, gender equality etc
  • Saudi has relatively high HDI, but lots of gender disparities, e.g. limited women rights
