Measurement Flashcards
Opisometer
An opisometer can be used to measure short curved lines for example a road or a river on a map
Measuring length
A metre stick or ruler measures straight lines
Trundle wheel
Used to measure long curved lengths for example around a flower bed
Vernier callipers
To find the diameter or width of a solid object for example marble or a piece of piping
Measuring area
Area is how much space something covers
Area = Length x Width
Mass
Mass is the amount of matter in an object
It is measured in a lab using an electronic balance
Measuring volume
Volume tells you how much space something takes up
Volume = Length x Width x Height
Measuring volume of and irregularly shaped objects
Using a graduated cylinder and/or an overflow can
Float
An object will float in a liquid if it has less dense than the liquid
An object will sink if it more dense then the liquid
Ice
Ice will float on water as it is less dense than water
Speed
The distance travelled per unit time is known as the speed
Velocity
Velocity of an object is the distance it travels per unit time, in a given direction
Acceleration
The change with the velocity per second is known as the acceleration of a body
Measured in metre per second per socond (m/s/s) or metre per second
