Heat Flashcards
Solids, liquids and gases
When heated
The unit of energy
Is the joule (J)
Heat
Is a form of energy
Water
Begins to expand when cooled below 4 degrees Celsius
Bimetallic strip
Shows that not all metals expand at the same rate, change
E.G. thermostats in heating or an iron
Convention
Heat travels through a liquid (liquid or a gas) when the particles move and carry the heat
Radiation
Heat travels from a hot object without the need for a medium, does not need a solid , liquid or gas to go through, will flow through a vacuum
Conduction
Heat travels from particle to particle along a substance, normally a solid
Conduction
Is the method by which heat travels from particle to particle through a solid
Conductor
Something that allows energy e.g. Heat to flow through the it. E.g. Metal is a good conductor
Insulator
Is a substance that doesn’t allow heat to flow through it easily e.g. Plastic
Air
Is a good insulator , keeps animals warm, is trapped by the fur and helps to insulate the animal
Layers
The hairs on our arms are not very good at keeping us warm,if we wear layers of clothes, air is trapped to keep us warm
Temperature
A measure how hot an object is
Temperature is measured
With a thermometer
