Measles and Morbilliviruses Flashcards
What are morbilliviruses?
- RNA viruses
- rash of the skin
- measles, rinderpest, PPR, CDV etc
Origin of measles virus
- Al RAZI - differentiated smallpox and measles
- MeV and RPV share common ancestor
Measles:
-incubation = 10-12 days
-red blotches appear 7-18days post exposure, Koplick’s spots
-fever, sneezing, coughing,
other infections
Worldwide
-leading causes of death of young children despite presence of vaccine
Vaccine
1st dose: 12months or older
2nd dose: 4 weeks after first dose, catches 5% of vaccinated who failed to respond to first dose
Whats in the vaccine
Attenuvax - 1968
Mumpsvax - 1967
Meruvax - 1965
How to make mumps vaccine
- swab patients throat
- inoculate nutrient broth and use to infect hen’s egg
- after several passages in eggs, remove embryo and culture cells
- passage virus in chick embryo cells 5 times
- test for virus attenuation and immunogenicity in humans
Rinderpest
- cattle plague
- high mortality
- originated in Asia
Canine Distemper Virus CDV
- first isolated by Henri Carré in 1905
- first vaccine developed 1938
CDV
Transient fever 3-6 days post infection - ACUTE
-high potential for zoonotic spread
Morbilliviruses
spread via two receptor molecules
Novel rubulaviruses
Human parainfluenza virus (PIV)
-resp. tract illnesses
