  • Statistics, such as census data, can give lots of information about what place are like
  • Population, population structure, average income, crime figures
  • Statistics don’t usually say a lot about sense of place

  • Maps show quantitative demographic and economic data

- Some maps show qualitative information such as maps of indexes

What do films, photography and art show?

  • Visual representations show what places look like and can give some sense of the character of place
  • Photographs can be altered so places look different to reality
  • Paintings and sculptures can be less reliable than films and photography at showing what a place looks like because it’s the artists interpretation.

  • Written representations can be used to describe places, but also can evoke a sense of how it feels to be in that place
  • Usually offers perspective of the author and doesn’t show a complete picture
  • Newspaper articles can give a lot of detail, but can be biased
  • Stories, music and poetry can give emotional impressions, but only from the writer’s perspective
