Q

Where and how did the Bristol Harbourside Development start?

A
  • The area of land around canons marsh was an industrial wasteland embarrassingly close to the city centre.
  • Bristol council were tight for money so brought in private enterprises. Unlike the development under the operation of UDC, there would be maximum public engagement.
  • The catalyst for change arose when lloyds bank proposed the building of their regional HQ on the waterfront

Q

What were the issues with Chrest Nicholson’s proposals?

A
  • Leisure concentrated in one mammoth building with the floor area being the same as before
  • The tall buildings mean there is only 1 proper viewpoint of the cathedral towers
  • Not mixed use - there should be mixture of housing/workshops/cafes/offices/ leisure centres/ marine activities all in one
  • Blocks of flats still dominate the dockside
