Bristol Flashcards
What is a UDC?
Urban Development Corporation
What was the UDC in Bristol called?
BDC, Bristol Development Corporation
What was the aim of BDC?
To spearhead the physical, economic and social regeneration of the urban development area.
What changes did BDC make?
- Building of the spine road
- Housing developments
What were some complaints with the BDC
- For every £1 of public sector investment, some £3.45 was leveraged from the private sector
- They failed to include the local community
- Disregard for social impact of their activities
- Little evidence of impacts on deprived communities and socio-economic polarisation increase
What changes did BDC abandon?
- The building of a weir to control the water level of the Avon
- Quay point (a commercial and retail development adjacent to temple meads)
What proposals did the BDC suggest
- Spine road
- Development of social facilities and leisure
- Temple meads - Critical mass of development can be integrated with an expanding transportation exchange
- Floating Harbour - A major leisure and tourism opportunity
WHen was the bristol harbourside development?
The final plans were approved in 2001
Where and how did the Bristol Harbourside Development start?
- The area of land around canons marsh was an industrial wasteland embarrassingly close to the city centre.
- Bristol council were tight for money so brought in private enterprises. Unlike the development under the operation of UDC, there would be maximum public engagement.
- The catalyst for change arose when lloyds bank proposed the building of their regional HQ on the waterfront
What were the issues with Chrest Nicholson’s proposals?
- Leisure concentrated in one mammoth building with the floor area being the same as before
- The tall buildings mean there is only 1 proper viewpoint of the cathedral towers
- Not mixed use - there should be mixture of housing/workshops/cafes/offices/ leisure centres/ marine activities all in one
- Blocks of flats still dominate the dockside
What was included in Ferguson’s Little Venice Plan?
- Mr Ferguson had knowledge of bristol and is an insider
- Ensured the dockside of bristol stayed secure
- Introduced new canal opposite to Anchor road, a modern waterway into the heart of development
- Plans for 450 houses and apartments
- Large warehouses and workshops
What were the final plans approved in 2001?
- Mostly Ferguson’s plan with a mix of Chrest Nicholsons.
- Furthur new developments of the north side of the harbour completed
- Hotwells road seeing a significant number of developments primarily for residential use
