What are adverbial clauses?
Functions as an adverbial to add description about time, manner or place.
E.g. - when I go home - , should I tidy my room.
What are comparative clauses?
Starts with ‘as’ or contains ‘then’.
E.g. he slept - as - the train arrived at the platform.
What are the types of subordinate clauses?
Noun clauses, adverbial clauses, relative clauses, comparative clauses, non-finite clauses, verbless clauses.
What are the clause elements?
Subject, verb, object, complement, adverbial.
What is the subject element?
What is doing the verb. Usually appears before the verb.
What is the verb element?
May be a single verb or verb phrase.
What is the object element?
Direct object directly affected by the verb.
Indirect objects receive the action of the verb.
What are the compound elements?
Subject complements add description to the subject.
Object complements usually follow direct objects and add description to the object.
What are the adverbial elements?
Express range of meanings like manner, space, and time.
Can be linking words, time words, or clauses.
What is the purpose of a noun?
Replaces noun to avoid repetition.
What is the purpose of prepositions?
Specifies location.
What is the purpose of conjunctions?
Join lexical items or clauses together - shows type of relation between them.
What is the purpose of determiners?
Determines the amount/specificity of a noun.
What are noun phrases?
Group of words centered around a noun that acts as the ‘head’ of the phrase.
What are the four parts of a noun phrase?
Head word, determiner, modifier, quantifier.
