MEANING AND PURPOSE Flashcards
Glorifying God
‘Let us make man in our image’
‘God saw all that he had made and it was very good’
‘Give glory to your father …’ (Matthew)
‘Man fully alive is the glory of God’
-> show glory of God in how we live our lives, worship god, good deeds etc
-> spread teachings
Preparing for judgement
‘God was in Christ reconciling the world to him’ (Corinthians)
‘Whatever you did got the least of them you did for me’ (Matthew)
- parable of sheep and goats - reconciled through good deeds to others
Some believe God’s judgement is METAPHORICAL - tells us how to live our lives
- some believe the soul making theodicy - we will all develop into God’s likeness
Bringing about God’s kingdom
‘On Earth as it is in heaven’
‘Time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand’
- some believe this to be ESCHATOLOGICAL (Jesus will return at the end of time), some that WE SHOULD BRING HEAVEN TO EARTH, some that we should be motivated by a punishment or live a life of MYSTICISM
Spiritual resurrection
Plato - world of the forms
Judaism ‘breath of life’
‘There is a NATRUAL body and a spiritual body’
CONFLICTS WITH PURGATORY … as this would mean a concept of ‘time’ in immortality
Bodily resurrection
‘’Many of those who sleep in the dust will awake, some to everlasting life and some to everlasting contempt’
Michelangelo - last judgement
Mummification ? - body defines a person
Martyrs believed they would be saved after death
Cremation allowed only since 1963
Psychological judgement
The mind can make a heaven of hell and a hell of heaven - James milton
Jung - consciousness develops until we have a realisation of who we are
But what about escape being possible then? Therapy? Do we deserve it
Objective immortality
Continue as part of God (process theodicy)
Not Subjective immortality (I) but a panentheistic relationship
Typical Christianity believes about judgement?
Venial (not serious) sins cleansed after death
Orthodox - 40 days after there will be a judgement to see if they will wait for 2nd coming of Christ (general judgement)
Augustine beliefs
Death on cross made it possible for salvation but the full of Adam and Eve had an effect on every human born spiritually and physically
the spiritual and physical effects of sin would be removed through resurrection
Jesus physically went to heaven so we can too
Paul ‘s quote
If Christ is preached as raised from the dead how can some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead?
