Excess CSF in the ventricles or subarachnoid space
HYDROCEPHALUS
Two types of Hydrocephalus
Communicating hydrocephalus or Extraventricular hydrocephalus AND Obstructive hydrocephalus or Intraventricular Hydrocephalus
Assessment for hydrocephalus
- enlarged fontanelles
- “bossing” of forehead
- “sunset” eyes
- separated suture lines
- lethargy or irritability
- shrill cry
- increased ICP
Most often used as a term for all spinal cord disorders
SPINA BIFIDA
Absence of cerebral hemisphere; occurs when end of neural tube fails to close early in intrauterine
ANENCEPHALY
Slow brain growth leading to fail by 3 deviations in normal growth chart
MICROCEPHALY
Posterior luminae of vertebrae fail to fuse ; common in 5th lumbar or 1st sacral level but may occur at any point in the spinal canal
SPINA BIFIDA OCCULTA
Meninges covering the spinal cord herniate through unformed vertebrae
MENINGOCELE
Spinal cord and meninges protrude through the vertebrae
MYELOMENINGOCELE
Cranial meningocele or myelomeningocele
ENCEPHALOCELE
Overgrowth of the neural tube in 16-20 of fetal life
