CHILD DISORDERS (RESPI - Disorders of Lower Respi Tract) Flashcards
Inflammation and infection of the major airway
INFLUENZA
Inflammation and infection of the major bronchi and trachea
BRONCHITIS
Inflammation of the fine bronchioles and small bronchi
BRONCHIOLITIS
Caused by the pathogenic RNA virus
RESPIRATORY SYNCYTIAL VIRUS BRONCHIOLITIS
Most common chronic illness in children; intermittent or chronic
ASTHMA
Assessment for ASTHMA:
- Wheezing
- Dyspnea
- “panting”
- Dry cough
- Cyanosis
- Decreased o2 sat
- Hyper resonant lungs
- Barrel-shaped chest
- clubbing of fingertips
When a child fails to respond to treatment and an attack continues
STATUS ASTHMATICUS
Chronic plugging and dilation of the bronchi
BRONCHIECTASIS
Infection and inflammation of the alveoli; bacterial or viral infection
PNEUMONIA
two types of pneumonia
Hospital acquired (strep / pneumococcal)
Community acquired (chlamydia / viral)
Follows an upper respiratory tract infection
PNEUMOCOCCAL PNEUMONIA
caused by chlamydia thracomatis; contracted from the mother’s vagina during birth
CHLAMYDIAL PNEUMONIA
Caused by viruses of the upper respiratory tract infection
VIRAL PNEUMONIA
Caused by mycoplasma organisms which are similar to viruses but much larger
MYCOPLASMAL PNEUMONIA
caused by an aspiration of lipid or oily substance
LIPID PNEUMONIA
Caused by aspiration of hydrocarbon bases
HYDROCARBON PNEUMONIA
Examples of hydrocarbon bases
Furniture polish, cleaning fluids, kerosene, gasoline, lighter fluid, insect spray
Collapse of the lung alveoli
ATELECTASIS
Presence of atmospheric air in the pleural space which causes the alveoli to collapse; air seeping from ruptured alveoli and collects in pleural cavity
PNEUMOTHORAX
Occurs from a combination of surfactant deficiency, barotrauma, oxygen toxicity and continuing inflammation
BRONCHOPULMONARY DYSPLASIA
caused by the mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria
TUBERCULOSIS
Mode of transmission of TB
Inhalation of infected droplets
test for TB
- Tuberculin test
- Mantoux Test
- CTX
- Sputum Test
Generalized dysfunction of the exocrine glands
CYSTIC FIBROSIS
treatments for cystic fibrosis
- Synthetic pancreatic enzyme
*Humidified oxygen - Aerosol therapy
- Chest physiotherapy
- Respiratory hygiene
- Adequate rest and comfort
- lung transplant
