MCH-cell structure Flashcards
How is resolution limited?
By the wavelength of radiation
What is sectioning?
Technique used for soft tissue specimens, embedded into wax to avoid distortion
Differential staining?
used to distinguish between 2 different things
What is the order of stains applied to bacteria during the gram stain technique?
crystal violet 2 iodine then 2 alcohol (slide is washed with it)
What is the result for gram positive bacteria in the gram stain test?
Remain crystal violet
What is the result for gram negative bacteria in the gram stain test?
pink/red (saffronin)
Cell theory?
1)smallest unit capable of independent life
2)basic unit of all living organisms
3)arise from other cells thru cell division
4)growth ‘instruction’ passed onto new cells
What steps do pre-prepared slides undergo?
1) Formaldehyde:used to preserve specimens
2) Sectioning:specimens dehydrated with alcohol and placed into a wax mould
3)staining
4)securing sample onto microscope slide and adding a cover slip
Staining prep?
sample placed on a slide and allowed to dry. Passed thru a flame to heat fix it onto the slide enables it to take up stains.
How is data from electron microscopes presented?
Electron micrographs
Convert from nm to μm to mm to m
Divide by 1000 each time
ESS: describe the function of the surface cell membrane
Controls the exchange of materials
ESS: describe the function of the cell wall
offer structural support to the cell
