What is the Truth and Reconcilation Comission and what is its role?
- Group created to investigate/document the history and impact of residential schools in Canada
- Their goal is to promote healing between Indigenous and non Indigenous Canadians by addressing the harm caused by residential schools
What are the 94 Calls the Action outline in the TRC report and why are they significant?
- They are a series of recommendations made by the TRC to address the existence of residential schools and advance reconciliation
- Significant because they provide a roadmap for meaningful change and progress towards reconciliation and highlight the importance of Indigenous perspectives and leadership
What is the significance of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples UNDRIP in the reconciliation process?
- It is a global framework for the recognition, protection and promotion of the rights of Indigenous peoples
- Adopted by Canada in 2016
- Demonstrates a commitment to upholding the rights of Indigenous peoples and provides a basis for the development of policies and practives which are respectful to them and their values
What is the concept of cultural safety and how does it relate to healthcare of Indigenous peoples?
- Cultural safety is the practive of creating safe and respectful environments for individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds
- It involves understanding and respecting Indigineous ways of knowing, being and doing and working collaboratively with Indigenous communities to improve health outcomes
What payment models are used in Canada for physicians?
- Fee for service: payment based on quantity of services provided
- Capitation: payment based on number of patient’s seen
- Alternate Payment Plan: Outlines salary, incentives, bonuses
How does competency differ from capacity?
Competency is the ability to understand information about your health and treatment plans and make decisions based on that information. It is a legal determination.
Capacity is similar but refers to your ability to make a decision about your treatment at a specific point in time. It is a clinical determination made on a case-by-case basis and determined by the clinician porposing the treatment.
An individual who is able to understand the nature and anticipated effect of proposed medical treatment and alternatives, and to appreciate the consequences of refusing treatment, is considered to have the necessary capacity to give valid consent.
What are exception to consent?
Emergency situations
- They should be limited to those necessary to prevent prolonged suffering or to deal with imminent threats to life, limb or health
- The previously known wishes of the patient must still be repsected
