MCAT Chemistry and Physics Flashcards
What is the meaning of isoelectronic?
Isoelectronic = having the same numbers of e- or the same electronic structure.
What sides are multiplied when using the sine?
Multiply the opposite side from the angle and the hypotenuse
What does the slope of a displacement vs. time graph represent?
In a displacement vs. time graph, the slope of the graph correlates to the velocity of the object
What big four kinematics equation should you use if the missing variable is time?
Vf^2 = Vi^2 + 2ad
What two kinematics equations can be used to solve for distance when given a free fall problem?
- y = 1/2 * gt^2 2. t = (2y / g) ^ (1/2)
What is the exception to Aufbau rules?
Exception to Aufbau rule: e- should be removed from a higher orbital in order to achieve a more stable state. (i.e. Mn ^2+ should have e- removed from 4s^2 before 3d^5)
What is ionization energy?
Ionization energy refers to amount of energy to remove an e-
What is the function of phosphorus in fluorescent lights?
Phosphor essentially acts to convert the ultraviolet light emitted by mercury into light waves in the visible range.
What equation is used to determine energy when given wavelength?
Use equation: E = (h*c)/ lambda h = 6.63 *10^-34 m^2kg/s
What equations are needed to find the end height of an object when given the following: distance, Vi, and angle of launch from the horizontal?
Find time it takes to travel sed distacne by breaking down Vi into Vx and Vy. Equation: Vx = Vicos(angle) and Vy =Visin(angle) Then use (yi - yf) = Vyt + (1/2)a*t^2
What is (arguably) the strongest intermolecular forces?
Hydrogen bonding
What is the primary factor in determining bond length?
Bond lenght is primarily determined by the atomic radii of the bonded atoms. So, bonds formed with hydrogen atoms tend to be shorter than bonds formed with any other atom.
What is a dipole moment?
The polarity that exists between two molecules. Often represented by an arrow with a plus sign near the atom with the partial +, pointing in the direction that the e- are being pulled (towards the more electronegative atom.
What are the bond angles in an ideal tetrahedral geometry?
They are equal to 109.5 degrees - in the case where the central atom is bonded to 4 identical atoms.
What is the octet rule?
Each atom will fill its valence shell with 8 e-
If mass of the box (m) is held constant, what is the result of doubling the value of the spring constant (k) on the distance an object moves?
The spring will only stretch half as much
What is the torque equation?
t = F * d * sin(theta)
What is the tension equation?
m1gsin(theta) = tension force
How will a horizontal beam experience translation when it is released from a pivot point on one end?
A board will move around its hinge, and its center of mass will move down and to left as the board rotates around the pivot point. The center mass will be translated.
How do you find the number of individual ions present in a 1 L solution of 1.5 M NaCl?
1.5 mol NaCl x (6.02x10^23 molecules)/1 mol NaCl x 2 ions / 1 molecule = 18.06x10^23
What are the steps in calculating a percent yield?
- Balance the chemical equation; 2. Find limiting reagent; 2a. Based off of limiting reagent you are able to find theoretical yeild; 3. divide actual yeild by theoretical yield adn x 100%
How many moles of H are there in 13.5 g of H2O?
13.5g H2O x (1 mol H2O / 18 g) x (2 mol H / 1 mol H2O) = 1.5 mol H
What is a limiting reagent?
The limiting reagent is that which is used up first in a chemical reaction. Theoretical yield is defined as the amount of product expected to form from the complete reaction of the limiting reagent, assuming that the reaction goes perfectly.
What are the untis for energy?
(Kgm)/s^2 - (Kgm^2)/s^2 - N*m - J
