MC Exam 2: Studying Motor Performance Flashcards
What is a discrete skill?
recognizable beginning and end
EX: kicking, throwing
can be highly motor or highly cognitive
What is a continuous skill?
no recognizable beginning or end
ex: walking, running, swimming
What is a serial skill?
number of discrete tasks strung together
order and timing may be important
starting a car, playing the piano
What is a closed skill?
the environment is somewhat constant
Ex: an assembly line, treadmill, bicep curl
What is an open skill?
environment is constantly changing
ex: driving on busy road
What are three criteria for measuring motor behavior?
objective, reliable, valid
What is objectivity?
will two observers get the same result when evaluating the same motor performance
What is reliability?
is measurement reproducible
What is inter rater reliability?
do different people rate the same
What is intra rater reliability?
how consistent is same person
What is validity?
are you measuring what you think and want to measure
What in content validity?
does instrument measure all dimensions of a particular function
What is face validity?
does instrument appear to measure what it sets out to measure at face value
What is construct validity?
does instrument accurately measure a construct
What is concurrent validity?
does instrument agree with other instruments used
What is sensitivity?
a test detecting dysfunction when it is present
100% sensitivity = no false negatives
negative test rules out a dysfunction (Snout)
What is specificity?
a test detecting no dysfunction when it is not present
100% specificity = no false positives
a positive test rules in a dysfunction
What are four ways to measure outcome?
- error
- time and speed
- movement magnitude
- performance
What are three types of error?
- constant error- how far deviated from target
- absolute error- overall deviation w/o concern of sign
- variable error- consistency of trials
What is main measurement for time and speed?
reaction time- this is time from the beginning of stimulus to beginning of a response
What does reaction time involve?
central planning (premotor) and muscle activation (motor)
What is movement time?
the initiation of response to the end of the movement
What is reaction time and movement time?
response time
What is movement magnitude?
- how large is movement?- long jump, how far can you get in an obstacle?
- physiological reaction- BP, HR, O2, EMG
