What is MBIT?

A

States that all mental states are identical to brain states (ontological reduction), though they are not synonymous (so not an analytic reduction). Overall, it is unporvable.

A
  • compatible with science, evolutionary theory explains conciousness the best.
    -neural deoendance, like drugs altering mental states.
    -avoids problems of dualism.
    Follows occams razor.

Dualist arguments applied

A

Indivisibility: Perhaps the mind is divisible into types of mental states. If minds are brains and brains are divisible then mind must be too
Comceivability: arw mind wout brain conceivable? Does metaphysicall possibility impliy actuality?

Issue:
Issue w providing the type identities

A

If both animal and human experience same pain (rusty nail), we wouldnt find that they both had identical brain states. The same coukd be said about computers or aliens. Not evenry mental states in identical to brain state.
