MB - Fatty Acid Metabolism II Flashcards
What is fatty acid anabolism?
Beginning with Acetyl CoA, the fatty acid chain grows by 2C at a time
What drives this anabolic reaction?
The release of CO2
What is Acetyl CoA converted to in the cytoplasm?
Malonyl CoA
How is Fatty Acid Synthase (FAS) structured?
6 active sites
2 distinct units:
- Modifying functions
- Condensing functions
What are the 3 steps involved in making the C-C bond?
1) Acetyl group is transferred to KS via ACP and MAT
2) Malonyl group is transferred to ACP via MAT
3) KS joins together the malonyl and acetyl group (CO2 is lost)
What is step 2 of this process?
The C=O bond is reduced using NADPH
- Molecule is transferred back to KS (more C added)
What occurs in step 3 and 4?
- Alpha and Beta carbon dehydrated (C-C –> C=C) (Hydroxyl removed)
- The double bond is reduced
What are the 5 types of lipoproteins?
- Chylomicrons
- VLDL- Very Low-Density Lipoprotein
- IDL- Intermediate Density Lipoprotein
- LDL- Low-Density Lipoprotein
- HDL-High-Density Lipoprotein
Why does this occur VLDL –> IDL –> LDL?
As the lipoproteins lose TGs
