Maxillary Sinus Flashcards
What are the functions of the paranasal sinuses?
Resonance of voice
Reserve chambers for warming inspired air
Reduce the weight of the skull
Where does the maxillary sinus drain to?
Drains into the nasal cavity via the semilunar hiatus.
Approximately 4mm diameter.
Where is the semilunar hiatus located?
Superiorly on medial wall of the sinus.
- so if there is a build up of mucous in the sinus or blood or other fluid- it will have to reach. high level before it goes into the nose.
Can become narrow or blocked during episodes of inflammation/disease.
What type of epithelium covers the sinus walls?
Pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium.
The cilia mobilise trapped particulate matter and foreign material within the sinus.
Move this material toward the Ostia for elimination into the nasal cavity.
