What are the functions of the paranasal sinuses?

A

Resonance of voice

Reserve chambers for warming inspired air

Reduce the weight of the skull

Where does the maxillary sinus drain to?

A

Drains into the nasal cavity via the semilunar hiatus.

Approximately 4mm diameter.

Where is the semilunar hiatus located?

A

Superiorly on medial wall of the sinus.
- so if there is a build up of mucous in the sinus or blood or other fluid- it will have to reach. high level before it goes into the nose.

Can become narrow or blocked during episodes of inflammation/disease.

What type of epithelium covers the sinus walls?

A

Pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium.

The cilia mobilise trapped particulate matter and foreign material within the sinus.

Move this material toward the Ostia for elimination into the nasal cavity.
