Max Performance Takeoffs and Landings Flashcards
What is Vx?
The best angle of climb speed, gets the most elevation gain in the shortest distance
What is Vy?
The greatest rate of climb speed, get the most elevation gain in a given amount of time
Where should you start a short field takeoff? Flaps?
As close to the beginning of the runway as possible / Set as rec’d by POH
How should you start the takeoff roll? What should be done with the flight controls?
Advance to full power, THEN release the brakes / Adjusted for minimal drag
When should you rotate on short runway? How long should you stay at that speed?
Rotate at Vx / Clear of obstacles or at least 50’ AGL, then lower pitch to get to Vy and slowly retract flaps
What is the soft-field takeoff procedure?
Flaps set per POH, keep moving once lined up and apply full power, back elevator gently keep nose up, allow airplane to lift itself off prior to Vr, once airborne lower the nose to Vx or Vy, slowly raise flaps
Approximately how high does ground affect impact your aircraft?
Approximately the wingspan of your aircraft
What is the short-field landing procedure?
Full flaps, maintain short-field approach speed (no more than 1.3 times stall speed), touchdown at a pitch attitude that will produce a stall at power off, power idle after touchdown, apply full brakes and full back elevator
What is the procedure for a soft-field landing?
Approach normally, short-field approach speed, hold ground effect as long as possible to kill speed, after touchdown keep nose up as long as possible, avoid using the brakes
