what is matthews birth narrative about
joseph accepting jesus as his son, the magi visit the messiah, the escape to egypt, the return to nazareth
what is in the part of joseph accepting jesus as his son
mary was found to be pregnant by the holy spirit and not be intercourse
joseph is doubtful of this but the lord told him to “not be afraid” as what is concieved in her is from the holy spirit
joseph told to call him jesus as it fulfills isaiahs prophecies
what is in the part of the magi visiting the messiah
after jesus was born the magi came to ask herod where the messiah was as “they saw the star and came to worship him”
herod was annoyed and was told of the prophecy:
“out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people israel”.
herod told the magi to go and look for the child so that he may go and worship him
magi followed the star and when it stopped they found jesus. WORSHIPPED HIM WITH GOLD, FRANKINCENSE AND MYRRH.
what was in the part of the escape to egypt
magi left and angel appeared to joseph in a dream, telling them to escape to egypt as herod is looking for the child to kill it.
herod found out magi tricked him and killed all first borns in bethlehem: prophet jeremiah was fulfilled. “weeping and great mourning”
they stayed until the death of herod where the prohecy was fulfilled: “from egypt, i call my son”
what was in the part of the return to nazareth
herod died, angel appeared in josephs dream and told them to go to israel, for “those who are trying to take the childs life are dead”
went to israel but then got news that archaelaus was there and were warned again, went to galilee
lived in a town called nazareth: they were called NAZARENES (JESUS OF NAZARETH)
proof/evidence about how jesus/joseph have been prophesised by isaiah
matthews birth narrative is an important symbolism that clarifies that what was in isaiahs prophet has been fulfilled.
jesus’ existence as “immanuel” was prophecised by also in things like the suffering servant, etc.
“the virgin will come and convieve a son callled immanuel” isaiah 7:14 connects to “she will give birth to a son and you are to name him jesus”

BROWN: There are issues with the part of the magi visiting the messiah
Morna Hooker: each gospel has a main prologue that unlocks the main themes and teachings of jesus: Matthews is the one that describes the line of David and the prophecies concerning Jesus being a descendant/the messiah.
