2 source, 4 source, Q source Flashcards
what is the 2 source solution
matthew and luke both used mark and q-source to write their gospel, with matthew relying on mark and luke relying on the q source “collection of logia sayings)
how does matthew copy from mark
matthew corrects marks aramaic sayings
how can we see matthew copying from mark in the gospel
matthew changes the way to refer to herod: mark uses basileus and matthew used tetrarch. however, he goes back to using basileus at the end of the part about herod: probably because he got tired of having to change the name.
which scholar said things about the source solution
streeter: as well as matthew and luke drawing upon mark and q, they also made use of 2 proto-gospels (A SPECIAL MATTHEW AND A SPECIAL LUKE)
what is the four source
mark, q, special mark and special matthew
why is 4SS good
it shows how people that were not living in galilee or jerusalem could still get information about jesus
what is a weakness of q (we dont know)
we have no physical evidence of the q source text and no direct evidence to it in christian teachings
These solutions depend on markan Priority, but some also believe in the augustinian hypothesis, which is matthean hypothesis
why do fundamentalist christians disagree with the 4SS
if matthew and luke were disciples of jesus, then why would they need special source?
this relates to the fact that they may have not actually been disciples of even lived in that time
strengths of the 2SS AND 4SS
they are both elegant and straight forward solutions and don’t involve any extra complications. they are PARSIMONIOUS
they have explanatory power (they shows exactly how the gospels were put together)
weaknesses of the 2SS and 4SS
these solutions depend on unproven theories. (both of them depend on the q source which has not been discovered) and it hasn’t been talked about by earlier by augustine or irenaeus
this is only an advantage if you refuse to accept that jesus could have miraculously predicted the destruction of jerusalem in 70CE. but if jesus was the son of god then he could prophesise and so the gospels are from the 50’s or 60’s CE, written by eyewitnesses who don’t need ‘sources’
