Matthew Chapters 1-7 Flashcards

1
Q

Testing God

Matthew 4:7

A

“Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”

We should not demand God to prove His existence through tests, as our very existence is proof of His reality. Testing God is unnecessary; He wants us to have faith in Him before receiving miracles.

Q

Satan and Jeus in the wilderness

Matthew 4:9-10

A

“All this I give you, if you bow down and worship me. Jesus said, ‘Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”

Jesus teaches us that worship is not just for God but also against idols. Things like phones, opinions, pride, or even people can become idols. Only God deserves our worship. Stand firm in your beliefs and resist the devil’s temptations.

Insults towards Christians for following Jesus

Matthew 5:11-12

A

“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven.”

Persecution is inevitable for Christians, but instead of being discouraged, we should rejoice. Our reward is in heaven, just like the prophets before us who endured persecution. Jesus will protect you through it.

Salt

Matthew 5:13
Luke 14:34-35

A

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?”

Christians are called to preserve God’s Word and bring flavor to others’ lives with Christ-like qualities. Keep His Word in your heart and mind to remain salty, adding a Christ-like influence wherever you go.

Reconcilitation and Forgiveness

Matthew 5:23-24

A

“If you are offering your gift at the altar and remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them.”

Jesus emphasizes the importance of forgiveness. Before offering gifts to God, we must reconcile with others. Like Jesus, we must forgive everyone, just as He forgave us.

Lust and adultey

Matthew 5:28

A

“But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

Lust is not only a physical act but a matter of the heart and mind. Focus on God, and with His help, resist temptation. Remember, your thoughts matter just as much as actions.

Q

1st part=giving to the needy 2nd part=where you should pray

Matthew 6:1-6

A

“When you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do. When you pray, go into your room and pray to your Father, who is unseen.”

Do righteous deeds for God, not to be seen by others. Whether it’s giving, praying, or fasting, do it in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. God knows your heart.

Q

A very important prayer

Matthew 6:7-13
(Luke 11:2-4)

A

The Lord’s Prayer

When praying, don’t babble aimlessly. Jesus gives us a simple structure for prayer: give thanks, ask for forgiveness, seek protection from temptation, and only then make requests for what you need.

Q

the consequence of forgiving others

Matthew 6:14-15

A

“For if you forgive others when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”

Forgiveness is essential for receiving God’s forgiveness. Don’t ask God to forgive you if you can’t forgive others. Jesus died for the sins of many, including those who wronged Him. We must forgive as He forgives.

Fasting

Matthew 6:16-18

A

“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face.”

Fasting is a private matter between you and God. Don’t make it obvious to others. Your relationship with God is personal, and it’s not for show. The reward for your humility is from your Father in heaven.

A link between the eyes and a lamp

Matthew 6:22-23
Luke 11:34-35

A

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.”

What you look at shapes who you are. Set your eyes on godly things, and your body will reflect that light. Guard your eyes from temptation, and keep your focus on God to stay spiritually healthy.

Serving 2 masters

Matthew 6:24

A

“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other.”

You cannot serve both God and money. God must be your priority over everything else. Whether it’s career, relationships, or possessions, nothing should take the place of God in your life.

Q

What must we seek first as christians

Matthew 6:33

A

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Prioritize God’s kingdom and righteousness above all else, and He will provide for your needs. Trust that when you put God first, He will take care of everything else in your life.

Q

Why mustn’t you judge someone

Matthew 7:1

A

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged.”

Judgment is reserved for God alone. We should not judge others because we did not create them, and we are sinful ourselves. Instead, we should show grace, knowing that we too will be judged by the same standard.

Asking,seeking and knocking

Matthew 7:8
Luke 11:9-10

A

“For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”

God desires to bless us, but He wants to see our faith through our asking and seeking. Don’t just wait for blessings to come; actively seek God and His will, trusting that He will provide.

Q

Golden Rule

Matthew 7:12

A

“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”

Treat others with kindness and respect, just as you would want them to treat you. This principle encapsulates God’s law, guiding us to live with compassion, grace, and integrity.

17
Q

Matthew 7:13-14
Narrow and wide gate

A

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

The path to eternal life is narrow and difficult, but it is worth the effort. Many are tempted to follow the wide road of sin, but those who choose to follow Jesus will find the narrow road that leads to salvation.

18
Q

False prophets,sheep and wolves

Matthew 7:15

A

“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.”

Be discerning when listening to preachers or teachers. Not everyone who speaks in God’s name is true to His Word. Stay vigilant, test everything against Scripture, and follow those who preach the true Gospel.

19
Q

Good tree and bad tree

Matthew 7:18-19

A

“A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

Our actions reflect our true nature. Those who live righteously bear good fruit, while those who persist in sin bear bad fruit. God will judge us based on the fruit we produce, so live in a way that honors Him.

20
Q

Lord,Lord and Doing the will of God

Matthew 7:21-24
Luke 13:22-27

A

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”
22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

It’s not enough to just speak about Jesus; you must live according to His will. Genuine faith is shown through actions, and only those who do God’s will can enter His kingdom.

No matter how many outwardly Christian acts you do, the Lord will always see the state of your heart. If not in the suitable condition for the Kingdom of God, He will deny you as you have denied Him (Mark 8:38)

21
Q

Putting Jesus’ words into practice, house built on a rock

Matthew 7:24

A

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

Doing the works of Christ is the foundation of a great Christian life. Like rock, Christ will keep us strong and it will take a lot of force to break and wear us down.

22
Q

Matthew 7:3–4
Prompt: Why should we look inward before correcting others?

A

Matthew 7:3–5
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?
How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?
You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

Analysis:
This passage focuses on the danger of hypocrisy, something Jesus frequently condemns in the Gospels. The message is clear: we should be actively working on our own flaws and character before we attempt to correct or guide others. It reminds us that spiritual growth begins with self-awareness and personal refinement. Only after we’ve addressed our own shortcomings can we genuinely and effectively help others. A personal reflection: when Marcus and Ethan began their spiritual journey, there was a tendency to feel spiritually superior, as though you were already equipped to lead them. That moment served as a humbling lesson — God used it to reveal areas in your own heart that needed cleaning. By working on yourself first, you become a more effective and authentic light to those around you.

23
Q

Matthew 7:6
Prompt: How should you respond to those who reject the message?

A

Matthew 7:6
“Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.”

Analysis:
This verse is about discernment in sharing spiritual truths. It warns against offering sacred wisdom to those who are hardened and hostile to the message of God. When someone shows resistance or disrespect toward the Word — whether they are outside the faith or even within it but unreceptive — it may be wiser not to persist. Sharing wisdom with those who are not ready or willing can result in your message being rejected or even attacked. The key is to rely on God to help you discern who is genuinely open and who is not. Even though there are “dogs and swine” in many places, the Lord gives clarity to see them for who they are and know when to speak and when to stay silent.
