Matters of life Flashcards
What does AID stand for and what does it involve?
Artificial Insemination Donor. A donor’s sperm is artificially put up the women’s vagina by a doctor. The baby will not be at all genetically related to the husband.
what does AIH stand for and what does it involve?
Artificial Insemination Husband. The husband’s sperm is artificially put up the women’s vagina by a doctor.
What does IVF stand for and what does it involve?
In vitro fertilisation. The women’s egg is fertilised with the male sperm in a test tube before the zygote (fertilised egg) is placed inside the mother’s uterus for a normal pregnancy to continue. The success rate is only 28%, so many women fertilise lots of eggs at once and keep them frozen, incase one doesn’t work.
Who tends to disagree with IVF and why?
Roman Catholics and orthodox christians. Because they believe that an embryo is already a life and many embryos are destroyed in the IVF process. Because it goes against the teachings not to kill and the sanctity of life (life is a gift from God). For the same reason they are against EMBRYOLOGY (experimenting on human embryos). They believe the gift of children should be natural, and if a couple can’t conceive it is simply God’s will.
What do muslims and protestant christians say about fertility treatments?
God wants us to have children (bible teaching: Genesis 1:28 states God blessed them: Prosper, Reproduce, Fill Earth) and had given us the intelligence to develop technologies fro our benefit.
when do Christians think life begins, and therefore humans shouldn’t be hurt after that point?
Later in pregnancy, at viability. When after 24 weeks a premature baby has a chance of survival with the help of incubators.
When do muslims believe life begins?
At ensoulment. 120 days (around 4months). Muslims agree with embryology if left-over embryos from IVF treatment are used rather than creating embryos for the purpose of eventually destroying them.
What do Buddhists say about fertility treatments?
There is no pressure to have children. They think it is up to the individual to decide matters on fertility treatment, but do believe WE HAVE NO SOULS. Obviously someone involved in destroying an embryo (a living being) would be creating bad karma.
What do many muslims and christians think about AID and surrogacy?
They are against them both. Because having a third person involved is a form of adultery.
Which religious group is against blood transfusions and why?
Jehovah’s witnesses don’t agree because they believe the life of a person is in the blood, which they get from the book leviticus in the bible. However they allow bloodless organ transplants.
what is said in Islam about transplants and transfusions?
In Islam it is HARAM (FORBIDDEN) to sell body parts so blood and organs must be donated freely.
what are designer babies? What problem do religious people have with them?
choosing what genes your child would have. It’s like ‘playing God’.
what is reproductive cloing?
creating an identical copy of a plant, animal or human.
What is therapeutic cloning?
Cloning parts of the body, which can then be used to cure specific diseases and illnesses.
What are human-animal hybrid embryos used for?
experimented on to find cures for diseases such as parkinson’s and alzheimer’s.
