Q

What does IVF stand for and what does it involve?

A

In vitro fertilisation. The women’s egg is fertilised with the male sperm in a test tube before the zygote (fertilised egg) is placed inside the mother’s uterus for a normal pregnancy to continue. The success rate is only 28%, so many women fertilise lots of eggs at once and keep them frozen, incase one doesn’t work.

Q

Who tends to disagree with IVF and why?

A

Roman Catholics and orthodox christians. Because they believe that an embryo is already a life and many embryos are destroyed in the IVF process. Because it goes against the teachings not to kill and the sanctity of life (life is a gift from God). For the same reason they are against EMBRYOLOGY (experimenting on human embryos). They believe the gift of children should be natural, and if a couple can’t conceive it is simply God’s will.

Q

When do muslims believe life begins?

A

At ensoulment. 120 days (around 4months). Muslims agree with embryology if left-over embryos from IVF treatment are used rather than creating embryos for the purpose of eventually destroying them.

Q

What do Buddhists say about fertility treatments?

A

There is no pressure to have children. They think it is up to the individual to decide matters on fertility treatment, but do believe WE HAVE NO SOULS. Obviously someone involved in destroying an embryo (a living being) would be creating bad karma.
