What are the types of drugs give some examples.
social drugs- tea, coffee, smoking and alcohol.
prescribed and over the counter medicines-valium, pain killers, asthma inhalers.
Illegal ‘recreational drugs’- cannabis, cocaine, ecstasy.
Performance enhancing drugs- steroids, barbiturates.
What is a drug?
Any substance that alters or affects the body or mind.
What groups are drugs classified into? (NOT A B AND C CLASS)
hallucinogens, stimulants, depressants, and narcotics.
Give an example of a hallucinogen, and what does it do?
cannabis, LSD. Alters the way we hear and see.
Give an example of a stimulant, and what does it do?
Nicotine, coffee, ecstasy. Increased brain activity.
give an example of a depressant and what does it do?
alcohol and solvents. slows down brain activity.
Which is one of the only religions that doesn’t tend to drink and why?
Buddhism because the fifth precept states that they should avoid maind-altering substances.
Why do christians believe that drinking in moderation is acceptable?
because Jesus himself drank wine at the last supper.
Why is drinking in Islam Haram?
because it makes the mind unfit to concentrate on Allah. Drinking can lead to liver failure and cancer.
why isn’t smoking forbidden in any religions?
There is no specific teaching that states ‘do not smoke’ but because it can be harmful religious people recognise that. Buddhists accept it because it doesn’t alter the mind significantly. Muslims see smoking in public as antisocial and try to give up smoking during the month of Ramadam. Christians may disagree with smoking because of the teaching that ‘your body is the temple of God’ and therefore it should not be harmed. But it is up to the individual to make sense of it.

What do most religious people think people who have abused drugs be offered?
HElp and compassion and would support rehabilitation.

possesing- 7 year sentence
supplying - life sentence
In britain, what is the consequence given for possessing Class B drugs such as cannabis and speed, and the consequence for supplying?
Possessing- 5 year sentence
supplying- 14 year sentence
In britian, what is the consequence for possessing Class C drugs such as tranquillisers and steroids, and what is the consequence for supplying?
possessing- 2 year sentence
supplying- up to 14 year for supplying (previously 5 years)
