Matter & Materials Flashcards
Materials are made up of tiny parts found in 3 different states, what are these stages
Solid
Liquid
Gas
We know that materials can change their state, when does this happen
When heat is added or removed
Where are metals found when mined
In different types of rocks
What are rocks that contain metal called
Ore
List the 8 properties of metals & explain each one
See photo
Hard - can’t be bent or scratched eg. Train track
Shine - when polished it will shine but it can lose its shine or rust - will rust when oxygen combines with metal
Malleable - can be hammered into different shapes
Ductile - can be stretched into long thin strands
Strong - can hold the weight of heavy things
Melt - will melt at high temp
Conduct electricity - electricity passes easily through metal
Solid - will stay solid at room temp
How does rust occur and what color is it
Rust forms when iron is exposed to oxygen
Dark brown or red
What are the 6 properties of non metals
See photos
Are Soft Are Dull Are brittle Do not conduct electricity Do not conduct heat Can be solid, liquid or gas at room temperature
What is conduction and give an example
The transfer of heat in metal
When one end of a piece of metal is heated, the other end gets hot
Magnets are metals that contain what
Iron, cobalt or nickel
What does it mean to be magnetic
It can attract certain metals
A magnetic filed can not be seen, what can you see
You can only see the effect of it
What is the only metal that is liquid at room temp and where can it be found
Mercury found in thermostats
Name the 7 uses of metals
Coins Wire Jewellery Furniture Man made structures Aeroplanes Kitchen utensils
