Matter And Materials Flashcards
What are the physical properties of matter
Strength, thermal conductivity, brittleness, malleable, elasticity, magnetic/non magnetic, melting/boiling point
What are chemical properties of matter
It is how that material reacts with another material
What is a mixture
A combination of two or more pure substances that are not chemically bonded
What are the properties of mixtures
- Can be mixed in any ratio
- The substances keep their separate properties
- The substance can be separated through mechanical methods such as distillation, chromatography, filtration and hand sorting
What is a pure substance
A single substance that is not mixed with anything else
What can be used to recognize pure substances
Melting and boiling points and chromatography
How do impurities affect the melting and boiling point of a substance
Impurities lower the melting rate and increase the boiling point
What is chromatography
When substances are divided into their various components and the various color components in food coloring and black ink can be identified. There is paper, gas, liquid and column chromatography
What is an element
A pure substance that can’t be broken down into simpler substances through chemical methods
What is a compound
A substance that consists of two or more atoms that are chemically bonded into a single substance
What are the diatonic elements
Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Flourine, Chlorine, Iodine and Bromine
What are physical properties of metalloids
They conduct heat and electricity better than non metals but not as good as metals
Their conductivity increases when heated
What happens to the conductivity of metals when they get hot
The conductivity decreases
What are ferro magnetic substances
Substances that are strongly attracted to magnets such as Nickel, Cobalt and Iron
What are the non magnetic substances
Tin, Copper and Manganese
