Electrostatics Flashcards
What is electrostatics
The study of static electricity/charges at rest
What happens when the same amount of positive and negative charges in an object are brought together
They neutralize each other so there is no nett charge
When can we say an object is electrically charged
When a little more of one charge is present in an object
What is tribo electrical charge
When two objects come into contact with one another and are then separated from each other, one gains electrons and obtains a negative charge and the other loses electrons gaining a positive charge
What is polarization
Attraction between charged and uncharted objects
What is a temporary dipole
When each molecule of an object has a positive and negative pole
What is induced polarization
When polarization takes place due to the proximity of an external charge (not permanent)
Describe the polarization of water molecules
Water molecules are polarized naturally. Oxygen atoms have stronger electrostatic forces than hydrogen. Oxygen’s side is slightly negative and the hydrogen atoms are slightly positive.
It is a permanent dipole. The molecule is neutral but electrons are arranged in an uneven manner
What is the law of conservation of electric charge
Charge is neither created nor destroyed, it is only transferred from one object to another
What is the principle of quantization of charge
An object has an electrical charge that is an integer multiple of the elementary charge (electron charge)
