Matter Flashcards
What is density
It is the amount of mass in a volume
What are the common units for density
G/cm to the power 3
Kg/cm to the power 3
How do you calculate density
Density= mass/volume
How do you calculate mass
Mass= volume*density
How do you calculate volume
Volume=mass/density
What is brownian motion
Brownian motion is when particles collide with fluids(liquids or gasses) which send them in a random direction
What is a fluid
A liquid or a gas
Describe the arrangement of particles in a solid
Very close together, high density
Describe the movement of the particles in a liquid
Close together, high density
Describe the movement of the particles in a gas
Far apart, low density
Describe the movement of the particles in a solid
Vibrate in a fixed position
Describe the movement of the particles in a liquid
Move fairly quickly around each other
Describe the movement of the particles in a gas
Move quickly in random directions
Describe the forces between the particles in a solid
Very Strong forces, attract particles
Describe the forces between the particles in a liquid
Strong forces
Describe the forces between the particles in a gas
Weak forces
What is a physical change
It is a change in which the substances’ properties change but no knew substance is formed
What is a chemical change
It is a change in which a new substance has been formed because chemical bonds are broken and new ones formed
What is the state change called when a substance goes from a solid to a liquid
Melting
What is the state change called when a substance goes from a liquid to a solid
Freezing
What is the state change called when a substance goes from a liquid to a gas
Evapouration
What is the state change called when a substance goes from a gas to a liquid
Condensation
What is the state change called when a substance goes from a solid to a gas
Sublimation
What is conduction
Conduction Is a type of heat transfer where heat energy is transferred to neighbouring particles
What is convection
Convection is a type of heat transfer where heat energy is carried by particles
What state does conduction occur in
Solids
What state does convection occur in
Fluids(liquids and gasses)
What is radiation
Radiation dips a type of heat transfer that does not require particles(can happen in a vacuum)
Which types of surface absorb heat energy
Matte black
Which type of surface reflects heat energy
Shiny white/silver
Why is double glazing good
Because it creates a vacuum between the two pairs of glass meaning heat can’t escape by conduction or convection and also air is a good insulator
Does a warm substance transfer its heat to a cooler substance
Yes
What happens to dye in water whilst the water is being heated up
The dye gets carried by the water and as the water is becoming less dense as it is heating up, it rises to the surface carrying the dye with it. Once the water at the surface cools down the particles loose kinetic energy so sink back down to the bottom carrying the dye with it
