Matter Flashcards
What are the three states of matter?
Solids, liquids and gases
Describe three ways the particles inside a solid, liquid and gas are different
The energy and therefore speed of the particles
The distance between the particles
The bonds between the particles
In which state do the particles have the most energy and are the furthest apart?
A gas
In which state are the particles the closest together ans there are lots of bonds between the particles?
A solid
In which state are the particles only vibrating?
A solid
Which state(s) of matter have mass (therefore you can weigh them)?
Solids, liquids and gases
Which state(s) of matter have a fixed volume?
Liquids and solids
Which state(s) of matter take the shape of a container?
A liquid
Which state(s) of matter have a fixed shape?
A solid
Which state of matter can be compressed and why?
A gas because there are large spaces between the particles
What do we call the movement of particles in a liquid or gas from a high to low concentration?
Diffusion
When a solid dissolves in a liquid, we form a what?
Solution
Where does the solid go when it dissolves in a liquid?
In between the liquid particles
What do we call the solid that dissolves in the liquid?
The solute
What do we call the liquid that the solid is dissolved in?
The solvent
If solid dissolves in a liquid we say it is what?
Soluble
When two or more different substances are found together we call it a what?
Mixture
What method would you use to separate sugar that was dissolved in water and why does it work?
Evaporation - the water boils and turns to a gas at a lower temperature than the sugar
What method would you use to separate the ink in different coloured felt pens and why does it work?
Chromatography - the colours that travel further up the filter paper are more soluble
What method would you use to separate sand from gravel and why does it work?
Filtering - because the sand is a different size to the gravel
What method would you use to separate iron filings from sand and why does it work?
Magnetism - because iron is magnetic
What method would you use to separate two liquids such as meths and water, regather one of the liquids and why does it work
Distillation - because one liquid boils at a lower temperature than the other
Describe five properties of metals that makes them different from most non-metals
Malleable Ductile Good conductors of heat and electricity Strong Shiny lustre
Why are metals used for cooking pots?
Good conductors of heat
Shiny lustre so attractive
