What are the two main types of carbohydrates we have looked at this year?
Starch
Glucose
Why would someone want to eat carbohydrates?
For energy
Explain when someone would want to eat starch and glucose
Eat glucose for short term quick release energy and eat starch for long term slow release energy
Explain how you would carry out a test for starch and what a positive and negative test would look like
Put a drop of Iodine on the food item and it would turn blue/black if it was positive. It would stay brown if the test was negative
Explain how you would carry out a test for glucose and what a positive and negative test would look like
Crush up the food in a test tube and put Benedicts solution in it. Heat the test tube. If it turns orange-red it is positive. If it stays blue it is a negative test
Explain why someone would want to eat protein
To help with growth, muscle building and repair of damaged tissue
Explain how you would carry out a test for protein and what a positive and negative test would look like
Put the food sample in a test tube and add Biuret A and Biuret B. If the food sample turns purple, this is positive for protein. If it stays blue, it is a negative test

Explain how you would carry out a test for lipids and what a positive and negative test would look like
Crush up the food in a test tube and add cold ethanol. If it turns cloudy then this is a positive test. If it stays colourless and transparent then this is a negative test
